While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, lip blushing is not a painful procedure. Your lips are numbed using a topical anesthetic before the procedure, and re-applied throughout. The anesthetic will make for a painless experience as the permanent lip color is being inserted.

Most clients do not experience any pain or discomfort during a lip tattoo procedure. Proper maintenance and following post-care guidelines are recommended to increase the longevity of your lip color.

  • Apply a natural lip scrub (honey with sugar) at least 3 days before the appointment, twice per day.
  • Apply Aquaphor or a moisturizing lip balm as many times as possible at least 3 days before.
  • If you get cold sore fever blisters, it is highly recommended to start taking a prescription antiviral 5 days before the procedure to prevent an outbreak.
  • No alcohol or caffeine 48 hours before the procedure.

Lip procedures are performed by depositing pigment into the lips, building layers of color using a permanent cosmetics machine, and delivering natural results.

The initial process takes anywhere from 1½ to 2 hours.

Typically, lip blushing lasts between 3 to 4 years and will gradually lighten and soften over time, requiring a periodic touch-up. The duration varies based on factors like skin type, lifestyle, and pigment color. By sticking to your permanent cosmetics aftercare instructions, you will maximize the appearance of your lip blushing over time.

3 hours after the procedure, you can use an ice pack wrapped in a clean paper towel to help with swelling. Cleanse your lips morning and night with a mild antibacterial soap. Apply Bacitracin ointment using clean Q-tips (not your fingers) 2–3 times per day for 3–4 days. Keep your hands clean and avoid touching the treated area.

After 3–4 days of Bacitracin application, begin applying Aquaphor (using a clean Q-tip, not your fingers) as needed until lips are healed or at least one week post-procedure. Avoid activities that induce sweating for 24 hours.

  • Do not scrub or pick treated areas.
  • Do not use peroxide or Neosporin on treated areas.
  • Do not expose the area to direct sun or tanning beds.
  • Avoid excessive moisture: facials, swimming, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, and steamy showers.
  • Avoid Retin-A, glycolic acids, exfoliants, and anti-aging products on the area.

Important: If you get cold sores or have ever had one in the past, you will need an antiviral prescription to avoid any breakout or flare-ups. Consult your physician for more information. Though rare, infection is possible — if you see signs of persistent redness, swelling, fever, or drainage, contact your physician immediately.
